The drive from Tucson up through Flagstaff was mostly serene and uneventful, save for a great deal of the scenery being absolutely breathtaking…especially through the Coconino National Forest.
We managed to stop once again at the Tsegi Canyon Restaurant (we found this little gem on the 2006 tour) where the stew is a bargain and fresh and hot, and the frybread was still huge, fluffy and tasty.
Be warned if you get the frybread burgers or tacos…they’re ridiculously huge…like…bigger than your head huge.
Almost went south toward Cyn de Chelly but eventually made the turnoff to 191N ok, and some very huge, genki rabbits came rushing out onto the highway in front of us, which was not too long before a smallish coyote and eventually another rabbit decided to join the club. Things were fairly smooth-going until we hit Blanding, after which, the roads were completely iced up.  We heard when we got in that an ice storm had hit the area around 7pm.
Megan stayed at the wheel, having the most experience driving under those sorts of conditions, and she got us all the way home to Moab.
We’re settled in at Hop’s place and there’s one workshop here on Saturday, after which we head out to L.A. and the workshop for Kishin.
Food highlights so far also include Alex’s stew, soup ’n sandwiches at Turtle Baking Co. & ice cream at the Pumphouse (all in MN), carnitas at Juanito’s and the Machaca and flan at Micha’s (in AZ)…and the occasional bits of things like french toast that Megan has been preparing along the way.
Big huge thanks to Iris and family and all the Mu Daiko folks ANDÂ Karen & Rome (and Bugsy!) and all the Odaiko Sonora folks.
Also a BIG HUGE THANK YOU to Toni & Lance (Taiko With Toni) who went out to Limon to pick up the BIG RED VAN and bring it into Denver. I am currently strategizing how to go get it from their place amidst all the craziness of impending L.A., Sac, Emeryville, Sonoma and PT in OR.
The crazy weather makes it ever more daunting…
